February Dinner Meeting 2008

Featured speaker Steve Klein sparked lively discussion of the "New Landscape of Learning"
at the Chico Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa meeting, 28 February 2008.

PDK members, student teachers and guests attended the February meeting of PDK, Chico, held at the Market Cafe. The keynote speaker was Steve Klein,  the Professional Development Coordinator from Butte County Office of Education, Center for Distributed Learning. His presentation, "Digital Students and Analog Teachers: Supporting Students In A New Landscape of Learning," included a wealth of examples and links to school districts and programs that successfully integrate technology to the learning experience. His interactive presentation included lively discussion about a variety of issues involved in teaching in a digital world.

How can teachers make technology work to improve learning? The first part is recognizing students as "natives" in a digital world and the possibilities available to support their learning. The second part is seeing how technology fits into the current framework of the instructional process and your school's improvement plan. Steve, shown at right with PDK, Chico Co-President Liz Capen, shared findings from current research, discuss how school activities can be supported with the technology currently in students' lives. Educators attending the meeting shared their perspectives on how technology can move education forward.
